July Art News

Welcome to July, Friends!

Today is the fifth day of 90-degree temps in the Land of Enchantment. My flower beds wilt at the end of the day, and doing anything outdoors after one in the afternoon is tough. The evenings are still pretty cool, and the sunsets are amazing - so there’s the tradeoff, right?

On the art front, I just finished a piece for my sister and her friends. I can’t show it to the public yet, just in case she hasn’t shared it with her amigas. I am working on a painting of Dolores Huerta. She is a cousin of mine (yes, that Dolores Huerta), and I hope to share it with her and my family at our reunion (in 2 weeks). Wait, that’s in 2 weeks? Wowzer, I have got to get busy painting. Of course, I will share that piece with you when it’s finished.

My latest inspiration comes from listening to Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. I’ve read it four times, and this time, I decided to listen to it while I create. Gilbert brings me to a state of art empowerment and permits me to practice my art in an unapologetically freeing way. Here’s one of my favorite lines from her book:

“The universe buries strange jewels deep within us all and then stands back to see if we can find them.”

I’m off to art. Here’s to all of us finding strange jewels in July!

Cheers,

Leslie
